Tiger Woods and AT&T; National to Return to Congressional Country Club in 2009

BETHESDA, MD — The 2009 AT&T National hosted by Tiger Woods is confirmed to be held at the historic Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD, Greg McLaughlin, president of the Tiger Woods Foundation and Bret Hart, president of Congressional Country Club jointly announced. Congressional Country Club originally agreed to be the host site for 2007 and 2008, but has now confirmed that in 2009 they will again host the $6 million PGA TOUR tournament, featuring a field of 120 professionals while benefiting the Tiger Woods Foundation.

“I know the players and fans loved coming out to the Blue Course last year. We are honored and excited by the support we have received from the board and members at Congressional Country Club,” Tournament Host Tiger Woods said. “I’m thrilled we will be able to once again hold our championship there in 2009.”

“Congressional Country Club was pleased in 2007 to be able to bring a professional golfing event back to the DC Region. The tournament was a tremendous success. Our members were proud to play an integral part in that success and at the same time allow for contributions to many well-deserving charities,” Hart said. “That pride, coupled with the excitement surrounding the tournament, led to an overwhelming vote by the membership to be the 2009 venue for the AT&T National. We look forward once again to working with AT&T and the Tiger Woods Foundation on this prestigious championship.”

The AT&T National brings some of golf’s finest players to the D.C. area while benefiting the Tiger Woods Foundation and paying tribute to the men and women in our Armed Forces. In addition to serving as the host organization, the Tiger Woods Foundation also plans to expand its programs to the East Coast by bringing the Tiger Woods Learning Center to Washington, D.C.

The Congressional Country Club, which opened in 1924, is par-72 course covering 7,173 yards. The course has played host to four majors–two U.S. Opens (1964 and 1997), one PGA Championship (1976) and the U.S. Senior Open (1995) and will host the U.S. Open once again in 2011. The Kemper Open was played there from 1980-86 and the Booz Allen Classic was held there in 2005. Congressman Oscar E. Bland and O.R. Lubring of Indiana, founders of the Club, set out to provide an informal common ground where politicians and businessmen could meet as peers, unconstrained by red tape. They took their idea to Herbert Hoover, then Secretary of Commerce, who agreed to serve as Founders’ Club President and, from 1922-1923, Honorary Founding President of a soon-to-be-built Congressional Country Club. Primarily because of the determination of these original two visionaries, the Club was incorporated in December 1921. Construction of the Club took two and one-half years from concept to completion. Its international recognition, intended for the world of politics, has been achieved instead in the world of golf.
