With the plethora of violent and sexually explicit games on the market, it might seem like kid-friendly games are in short demand. However, the exact opposite is true — it has never been a better time for kids to play video games. With the increasing popularity of motion sensor games and kid-movie video game titles, there are plenty of selections for boys and girls. But first, you need to select a console to play the games.

How We Rate the Game Consoles on this List

We rank the eczema lotion on this list by looking at three distinct areas that determine where they fall on the list. Specifically, we look at the price, ingredients, and effectiveness of the cream or lotion that the brand offers. For each of these three areas, we ask a series of questions that help us determine the strengths and weaknesses associated with each brand. We then weigh the strengths and weaknesses and assign the product a score out of five stars. Here are some of the question we consider when ranking:
- Features — Does the game console have specific characteristics that fit the playing styles of children? If so, then what are they?
- Games — How many games are available on the console? Do they appeal to children under the age of ten, or did the designer make them for adults? Do they contain violence?
- Overall price — How much does the game console cost? Does the price justify the features offered? Are there value packs that provide a better deal?
Top Five Best Game Consoles for Kids Under Ten Years Old
However, keep in mind that some of the games we included are rated E +10, which mean they are appropriate for ten-year-olds an up. While usually, this warns against simulated violence, if you have young kids, you may not want them playing them for personal reasons.
1. Nintendo Switch
If you take your kids on frequent road trips or airplane flights, then the Nintendo Switch will save you a lot of complaining. The Switch is currently the most advanced mobile gaming device on the market — but the mobile aspect is only one aspect of the device. Though you can take the controller with a built-in screen on the go, the console itself remains at home. When playing with the console itself, you can play on the television. Additionally, you can split off the controllers and play two players for some games. If you have two Nintendo Switch controllers, then you can play four player games. The switch comes with an Nvidia Tegra processor, Bluetooth, wifi capabilities, thirty-two gigabytes of internal memory and a gyroscope. However, the best part of the Nintendo Switch is the current selection of games available. Games like The Legend of Zelda provide endless on-the-go entertainment, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers exciting multiplayer gameplay that up to four players can take part in while sitting around the screen. We believe the Nintendo Switch is the best game console for kids under ten years old because it offers them the latest selection of excellent games as well as a fun and portable way they can play them. The Nintendo Switch is the best platform for in-person multiplayer games, which allow for fun real-life interactions, instead of the depersonalized nature of online games. The Nintendo Switch currently costs three hundred dollars at retail value. Considering you get a two-for-one deal with the purchase, we think it a pretty great deal.
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind
- Mario + the Rabbids Kingdom Battle
- Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition
- Splatoon 2
- FIFA 18 Standard Edition
- Just Dance 2022
2. Nintendo Wii
Though the Nintendo Wii might be getting old, it remains one of the most fun options for motion control gameplay. As long as you can ignore some dated graphics, the Nintendo Wii remains one of the classic kings of family entertainment. If you want your kids to get some exercise while playing video games, then the Nintendo Wii will be a better fit than the Switch. Unlike the Wii U — the prototype console for the Switch, which failed commercially during its release — the motion sensors of the original Wii console encourage an active style of gameplay.Included games, like Wii sports, actually make you stand up and move your body. Play tennis by actually swing the racket, and turn your race car with the tilt of a controller. The motion controller “Nunchuck” attaches to the remote for a unique style of gameplay which allows for the capture of movement. After the release of the Wii, Microsoft and Sony were quick to respond with the Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move — proof that Nintendo struck gold with the revolutionary Wii. The best part is since the console’s been out for a long time, it is much more affordable than many of the other consoles on this list. While Nintendo no longer manufacturers original Wii consoles, you can find them refurbished online. Refurbished consoles usually only cost a little more than one hundred dollars, and used versions can go for as low as forty dollars. Recommended games:
- Mario Kart Wii
- Just Dance Kids
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Toy Story Mania!
- Guilt Party
- Wii Sports
- Wii Party
- Disney Sing It: Family Hits
3. Sony PlayStation 3
Since its release in 2006, the PlayStation 3 offered a consistent value for families with big console exclusive titles like the Little Big Planet and Ratchet & Clank series. We think the Playstation 3 beats out the Xbox 360 because it has more kid-oriented games than the other console. In our opinion, it also beats out the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One — which offers superior graphics and more popular game selections — but with a much higher price. The PlayStation 3 comes with a media player that can run both regular DVDs and Blu Ray titles. One refurbished Playstation 3 costs around two hundred dollars — which makes it a little more expensive than the Xbox 360. However, we believe the exclusive games, added on Blu Ray player, and superior graphics are reasons enough for the price increase. However, if you prefer add-on features, like motion capture cameras and individual controllers, then the Xbox 360 might be a better purchase decision.
- Little Big Planet 2
- ModNation Racers
- Sports Champions
- Carnival Island
- Toy Story 3
- 3D Dot Game Heroes
4. Microsoft Xbox 360
Though the Xbox 360 remains part of the 7th generation consoles, it still packs a strong punch when it comes to kids games. The fact that new games continually release on the console shows that the public interest in the classic gaming device has not died down. Instead of dropping a bunch of money on an Xbox One — which is honestly just a revamped version of the 360 — you can buy a refurbished Xbox 360 for around one hundred dollars. Then, you can buy cheap attachments — like the Kinect system, a Guitar Hero controller and dance pad — for roughly the same price as an Xbox One. This system is also great if your kid only wants to play one particular game, like Minecraft, since you do not need to invest in features you will not move. The device also functions as a DVD player — though it cannot play Bluray discs as the PS3 and PS4 can. The Kinect in particular features a lot of games that appeal to kids like Kinectimals — which allows your child to take on the responsibilities of a virtual pet. Though it might not have the addicting Mario Kart series that kids love, racing enthusiasts will still enjoy the Need for Speed or Split/Second games. Recommended games:
- Skylanders: Superchargers
- LEGO Jurassic World
- Minecraft Story Mode
- Kinect Disney Adventures
- Guitar Hero Live
- Dance Central 3
- Need for Speed: Most Wanted
5. Sony PlayStation 4
The Sony PlayStation 4 offers a broader range of games than the PlayStation 3, but at a bit of a price increase. Still, it is nice because you can play almost every good PlayStation 3 on the PlayStation 4 thanks to the PlayStation Now feature, which allows you to stream old titles, and the PlayStation store updated titles. Currently, the PlayStation 4 cost three hundred dollars at retail value. However, if your child does not want a specific game on this system, then we generally recommend going with the PlayStation 3 — which offers older versions of many of the same titles. We included it over the Xbox One for the same reasons we added the PlayStation 3 over the Xbox 360. The PS4 offers better exclusive titles for kids, a Blu Ray player and better graphics. While big games like Ratchet & Clank, Little Big Planet 3, and Rayman Legends will attract children’s attention — addicting miniature games like Overcooked will keep them coming back to the system. However, we should note that Microsoft and Sony cater towards adult gamers more than Nintendo does. Recommended games:
- Rayman Legends
- Little Big Planet 3
- Lego Marvel Superheroes 2
- Ratchet and Clank
- Rocket League
- Skylanders: Imaginators

If you are worried about making the right decision about your child and game consoles, then we organized a helpful buyer’s guide. On it, we include some frequently asked questions by parents or grandparents interested in purchasing a video game for their child.
What Are the Newest Game Consoles?
The current most up-to-date consoles on the market are the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch. However, some people predict that there might be a new generation of consoles as early as 2022.
I Don’t Know What Games My Kid Likes. What Console Should I Get Them?
If you do not know what games your child likes, then you should probably go with the Nintendo Switch. This console offers the most extensive selection of good kid games, and it is the most up to date, which makes it the best game console for kids under 10. Otherwise, we would go with the older models: the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360
How Many Hours Should Each Day My Child Play Video Games?
Like anything in life, video games are excellent, as long as children do them in moderation. One hour of video games per night offers quite a lot of benefits for your children you would not think come with it. For example, one hour per day playing video games improves hand-eye coordination, social abilities and more feelings of satisfaction. However, we should note that once you cross the two-plus hours a day threshold, then the benefits previously mention quickly disappear. So, an hour per day is excellent — but monitor it closely.
Hopefully, we convinced you that there are plenty of kid-friendly video games available out there to enjoy. Many games the whole family can enjoy — including the adults in the family. Whether they are racing games like Mario Kart and Need For Speed, or sports games like Madden and FIFA, there are plenty of opportunities to turn a new game console into a friendly family game night. Just remember that you should closely monitor how much your child plays. If they play over two hours per day, then it might negatively affect their health.
