Review
Introducing the Jackson Safety W40 Insight, a fantastic hood that welders of all skill levels will find appealing. It has all the features of a premium helmet without the hefty price tag. The above average sized viewing field is great for beginners who want just a bit more space to see. The hood is super comfortable and lightweight which helps reduce neck pain and tension headaches so you can focus on quality rather than trying to get the job done as quick as possible. The 4 arc sensors are useful if you need to weld in tight spaces or somewhere with obstructions, because even if a few of them are blocked the lens will still darken. The digital controls are a breeze to use and can be adjusted to your needs even with gloves on. If you’re still not convinced about the Jackson Safety W40 Insight, keep reading. It’s an awesome helmet for the price.

What’s Good?
Extremely lightweight
The Jackson Safety W40 Insight is the definition of a lightweight helmet with the shell weighing a mere 9 ounces and a total of just over 20 ounces. That means you can weld all day without worrying about neck pain so you can focus on the task at hand. The balanced shell design ensures that the weight is evening distributed which reduces the ‘top heavy’ effect so you have one less thing to think about.
Hardhat and cheater lens capable
These days there’s no reason why you cant have your cake and eat it too. This helmet can be easily equipped with a cheater lens should you need one and if you need to wear a hard hat on the job there’s room for that too.
4 arc sensors
The Jackson Safety W40 Insight is equipped with 4 independent arc sensors strategically positioned to reduce the possibility of blockage during the weld. This is ideal if you’re working in cramped spaces or at odd angles. Even if 3 sensors are blocked the one that isn’t will be enough to keep you safe and free from damage.
Large Viewing Area
This one is pretty simple; the more you can see, the less strain you have on your eyes, the better the quality of your work will be. While it’s not the biggest in the Jackson family (see Truesight 2), it’s bigger than the standard 2″x4″ auto darkening lens which can really come in handy.
Grind mode
When you’re working in a hot shop all day you want to be as efficient as possible. With the Jackson Safety W40 Insight you can switch from weld mode to grind mode with the press of a button that can easily be used with gloves on. An LED indicator shows whether you’re ready to weld or grind so you can be sure you wont accidentally leave it on the wrong mode. No one wants to get flashed!
Easy to use digital controls
The intuitive digital controls on the W40 Insight ensures your helmet is adjusted to the exact requirements you need. Switch between shades 9 – 13 with ease and adjust the sensitivity and delay settings while on the go. The digital controls are glove friendly, saving you the time and energy you could be using elsewhere.
What’s Bad?
Shell feels a bit flimsy
At first glance the shell on the Jackson Safety W40 Insight might feel a bit flimsy. That, however, is so they can offer you the lightest helmet possible. This hood is actually really sturdy and can take a beating. Made from Hydraflex plastic this helmet will last a long time.
Slightly cramped inside
The sleek shell design means that it’s not as roomy as some may like, especially with a hard hat underneath. This is mainly just a matter of preference and doesn’t affect comfort or safety.
The Verdict
The W40 Insight is another impressive offering from the folks at Jackson Safety. Featuring a huge viewing area, it’s ideal for beginners who need a little more space to see and for seasoned pros who just want to see more. The hood is light enough to use all day so you can go home with a sense of accomplishment, not pain. Luckily they don’t sacrifice durability for weight, the Jackson Safety W40 Insight is made of high impact plastic to ensure it will last for a long time. The digital controls make it easy to switch between modes, shade range, sensitivity and delay even with gloves on. The best part of this helmet is the price; with all these fancy features you’ll pay a lot less than you’d expect. It would make a great first hood for the aspiring welder or a grizzled professional who just needs an affordable replacement,
