The Shark company has long been in the business of cleaning appliances, and they’re known for innovation. They were the first, for example, to make a “lift away” canister for their vacuums. One of their most popular lines of vacuum cleaners is the Shark Duo Clean. Shark Duo Clean reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and their reputation is high.
But what is it that sets them apart from other vacuums? In this article, we’ll take a look at the Shark Duo Clean, explain what sets it apart from the competition, and help you decide whether or not one of these popular vacuum cleaners is the right purchase for your home.
What Is the Shark Duo Clean?
The Shark Duo Clean is a household vacuum cleaner with a few unique high-end functions that set it apart from its competitors. It’s built to effectively clean many types of flooring quickly, safely, and easily.
It can tackle carpet, hardwood, and tile flooring with ease, and its powerful suction will pick up all the dirt you can see and a whole lot you couldn’t see.
It gets the “Duo” in its name from its two brushes: one is designed to deep-clean carpet, and the other is soft, making it both effective and safe for hardwood and other types of flooring.
That versatility extends to the rest of the Duo Clean’s design in the form of a wealth of attachments, easy-cleaning features, and a design that makes it easy to reach the farthest reaches of your home.
We could find few faults with this vacuum with our own review. It is a high-end product, though. Is the quality worth the price you’ll pay for it? Read on to learn what sets the Shark Duo Clean apart from other vacuums.
What Sets the Shark Clean Duo Apart From Other Vacuum Cleaners?
Duo Clean System
Shark’s Duo Clean System refers to the dual brushrolls on the Shark Duo Clean Vacuum. The head has two different brushrolls built into it: a bristle brushroll for agitating and deep-cleaning carpet, and a soft brushroll for picking up piled dirt and fine dust on hardwood and tile floors. The softer brush does an excellent job of picking up finer debris that competing vacuums often miss.
Moreover, the brushes aren’t powered by the suction of the vacuum itself; they are motorized and can be easily sped up or slowed down by a simple switch on the body of the vacuum.
If you move from carpet to hardwood, simply flick the switch to the hardwood-friendly option without any need to stop and switch out attachments.
Shark DuoClean Upright Vacuum for Carpet and Hard Floor Cleaning with Lift-Away Hand VacuumHEPA Filterand Anti-Allergy Seal (NV771) Black/Red (Renewed)
The Duo Clean system is praised by other Shark Duo Clean reviews, and our own testing revealed that this praise is deserved. This vacuum solves the problem many other vacuums run into when they hit hardwood floors, which is that they don’t get close enough to the surface to clean effectively.
The Shark can tackle large debris and even piles of dirt and other messes with ease thanks to the one-two punch of its brushrolls and high suction power.
Shark has even solved the problem of vacuums blowing fine dust and debris around before running it over with this vacuum. The Duo Clean System is this vacuum’s main selling point, and Shark Duo Clean reviews from professionals and consumers alike agree that it works as advertised.
Shark’s Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology with a HEPA filter means you won’t have to worry about allergies anymore when you vacuum. It traps 99.9% of all dust and allergens within the canister. That results in a much more pleasant overall cleaning experience than with vacuums that lack this filter and instead blow dust into the air.

The only downside to this is that this is a bagless upright vacuum, which means you have to dump it out manually when it’s full and expose yourself to allergens. This can be mitigated if you put the canister into a large bin before overturning it, or if you empty it into an outdoor bin.
Shark’s unique lift-away design allows you to pick up the canister and motor assembly with one hand while using the included wand and other attachments with the other hand. This instantly turns the Shark Duo Clean into something approaching a handheld vacuum, enabling you to easily clean hard-to-reach areas like stairs, ceiling fans, and tucked-away corners.
There’s also a suction control function so you can easily vacuum delicate items like drapes without worrying about damaging them. If there’s a downside to the lift-away design, it’s that the canister is heavier than a typical handheld vacuum. Some consumers may not end up wanting to do long cleaning sessions while lugging it around.
The NV803 model of the Shark Duo Clean has four useful attachments plus a handy bag to store them in. The first is a duster crevice tool, designed to fit into corners and tight spaces and suck up the dirt the collects in them.
It also comes with a unique under-appliance wand. This is a long, low-profile attachment designed to reach under and behind hard-to-reach spots. It packs up to 36 inches of reach, which should give you access to just about any spots you’d want to clean.

The Shark Duo Clean also comes with two pet-centric attachments. The pet multi-tool is a two-in-one attachment with a detachable head. Remove the head for a handy upholstery tool that can tackle dirt and pet hair on your furniture.
Or, using the head, which features a sturdy bristle brush, for more general cleaning. The pet power brush, meanwhile, is designed only for sucking up pet hair.
In most Shark Duo Clean reviews, one of the more under-sung features is how easy it is to clean. Anyone with pets, especially pets with long hair, will tell you that hair getting tangled in the brushes is all but inevitable. Shark has a uniquely simple solution to this issue.
The Duo Clean’s head opens with the press of a button, and another button pops out the brush rolls.
Each brush roll has a groove in it and using a tool that’s also stored in the vacuum’s head you can simply cut the hair out along the groove and pull it free. These tangles are unavoidable, but this solution will allow you to snip them out in a minute or less and move on with your cleaning.
The Shark Duo Clean packs a few more features that set it apart from the competition. It has edge cleaning along the right side; just run that side along walls and the vacuum will suck up even the dirt hiding against the molding. It also packs a 30-foot power cord, which is especially handy in combination with the lift-away feature.
You’ll be able to roam just about anywhere in any room without having to stop and move your cord to a different plug every few feet. Just be careful not to run over the cord, as the soft brush has a tendency to wrap it up very quickly. Finally, the Duo Clean has bright LED lights on its face to illuminate dirt in dark corners. This ensures that you’ll never miss a speck, even in the deepest corner of your basement.
Even the warranty on the Shark Duo Clean is outstanding: all buyers get a whopping seven-year limited warranty. Like most warranties of its kind, it covers manufacturing defects, not normal wear and tear, but seven years of coverage is still enough to give most buyers peace of mind in their purchase.
What Are the Downsides to the Shark Clean Duo?
Shark Clean Duo reviews do not have many negative things to say about the product, and we feel the same, but there are always some nitpicks. None of these are deal-breakers by any means, but you should be aware of them before you buy. Most, if not all, of these downsides are the result of tradeoffs Shark made to ensure the Clean Duo was as compact and versatile as possible, and for the most part those tradeoffs are worth it.
No Adjustable Brush Height
Some competing vacuum cleaners have a knob that adjusts how close to or far away the cleaner head is from the floor, but the Shark Duo Clean has no such feature. This may affect the quality of the vacuum’s suction, but we found that it performed admirably on all surfaces regardless. The different settings for hardwood and carpet keep the brushes from damaging your floors even though you cannot adjust their height.
Narrow Cleaner Head
This one is a bit of a catch-22. The Shark Duo Clean’s narrow cleaner head is great for reaching into tight spaces, and it can swivel to get into areas you never thought an upright vacuum would. The only issue is that, while it’s perfect for smaller and hard-to-reach spaces, it doesn’t cover as much ground in larger spaces. You’ll find you have to go back and forth more times with the Shark Duo Clean than with a vacuum with a wider head.
Another catch-22: the hose on the Shark Duo Clean is short because users are expected to lift the canister away from the frame, taking it and the hose with them. Still, the short-than-average length of this vacuum’s hose will sometimes force you to lift the canister when with a slightly longer hose you wouldn’t have had to.
The Shark Duo Clean is all about versatility: it wants to be able to clean every part of your home. As such, it is a compact piece of equipment. That means its canister will fill up more quickly than those of other, larger vacuums and will require more frequent emptying during marathon cleaning sessions.
There are plenty of cordless vacuums out there at similar price points to the Shark Duo Clean, so it’s a bit disappointing to have to lug the cord around when using this vacuum. This is exacerbated a bit by how easily the cord can get tangled in the softer of the two brushrolls. Again though, this is a tradeoff on Shark’s part: the Duo Clean has a lot of options and versatility, and making it cordless would likely have resulted in inferior performance dependent on battery life.
Shark Duo Clean Reviews: What Are People Saying About Shark Duo Clean?
Other Shark Duo Clean reviews praise the vacuum’s soft brushroll, which they say works wonders on hardwood floors. Vacuums are notoriously ineffective on hardwood and tile, but Shark has cracked the code and created a vacuum that really can do it all. Reviewers also praise the Shark Clean Duo’s suction, which is rated as either excellent or above average by most Shark Duo Clean reviews, and the bells and whistles like edge cleaning and LED lights for dark spaces work exactly as intended.
Another big check in the pro column for this vacuum is how easy it is to clean: many reviewers mention things like the built-in cleaning tool and cleaning grooves in the brushes and the bagless canister as making this vacuum very user-friendly on the maintenance front.
Tellingly, Shark Duo Clean reviews do not have a consensus on what they don’t like about this vacuum. Some are irked by the fact that the cleaner height can’t be adjusted. Others wish it were cordless, while still others claim the accessories leave something to be desired. This should tell any consumer that none of these flaws, while they may be real, are deal-breakers for what is otherwise one of the best vacuum cleaners on the market.
The Shark Duo Clean is designed to do it all. It cleans carpet, particularly low- and medium-pile carpet, with ease and does a better job on hardwood and tile than just about any other vacuum out there. It can break down piles of debris in seconds flat without spewing dust into the air.
Its narrow cleaner head and wealth of attachments can reach into even the most out-of-the-way crevices of your home and make quick work of pet hair. It’s easy to clean and its compact nature also makes it easy to store. In short, it’s all the vacuum most people will ever need.
