  1. Organization and a Clear Work Space – It is important to weld in a space that is dry and free from clutter. This will help prevent accidents and fires from starting.
  2. Lights and Leaks – Make sure that you are welding in a space that is well lit so you can see what you are doing. Check your machine for gas leaks, and make sure you have adequate ventilation! Be especially aware when working with metals that give off harmful vapors.
  3. Wear the Right Gear – Wearing the right welding gear will help protect your skin, eyes, and limbs. Be sure to wear welding gloves, a welding facial shield, a protective cover for your head, a shirt with long sleeves, long pants, shoes that will cover and protect your feet, and a heavy duty apron made for welder. We’ve included a list of the best protective gear above.
  4. Consider Others – Remember that no one within 20 feet should see a MIG welding arc without some sort of eye protection on. Before you begin to weld, make sure any other person in the same area in which you will be welding is wearing protective clothing and welding safety glasses.
  5. Be Prepared – Even the most experienced welders can have accidents. Be prepared for any worst case scenario by keeping a fire extinguisher on hand and keeping a first aid kit in your workshop. Hopefully, you will never need to use them, but it is good to have them nearby as a precautionary measure.
